Türkiye – New Tech Visa Program Launches

GMS Flash Alert 2024-235 | November 26, 2024

Turkish immigration authorities recently started to implement a new visa program exclusive to foreign technology professionals.1  The program allows both employees and start-up entrepreneurs with expertise to apply.

The application process is similar to a regular work permit application with the first step being the Consulate visa application in order to receive a reference number.  The second step is the Ministry of Labor and Social Security application using the aforementioned reference number.  Upon approval, the Tech Visa granted to the applicant will be valid for up to three years.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Türkiye has joined the ranks of other countries that are aiming to attract technologically innovative and creative individuals with relevant experience to the country to help boost Türkiye's economy and competitiveness.  The new visa program opens an entry path for foreign-national tech professionals and entrepreneurs to start up and operate technology enterprises in Türkiye.

As a result of this new visa program, swifter entry of technology specialists and start-up entrepreneurs into Türkiye can be anticipated.

Moreover, the Tech Visa is also expected to create more opportunities for Turkish citizens and permanent residents in the tech industry to work in globally-competitive teams alongside top tech talent from around the world.

The Tech Visa program aims to enhance the employment process of tech workers for employers as the program comes with several benefits that are targeted to improve the eligible employee’s working experience in Türkiye.  For example, employees who will be working for companies engaged in R&D activities will be exempt from income tax, and the state pays half of the social security income premiums, including universal health care.

The work visa process will also run smoother and exclusive only to tech visa applicants and their dependents. Normally in a work visa application, all sectors are examined and evaluated; however, since the Tech Visa focuses on a privileged specific field, the process will be smoother and more streamlined.  In contrast, with a standard work permit application, a significantly broader set of criteria is assessed, which may mean the process takes longer.

As this is a new program with different procedures and protocols, there is a possibility that there could be some initial challenges and hurdles.  Interested parties should reach out to their immigration advisers or a member of the immigration team with KPMG in Türkiye regarding questions and advice on appropriate next steps.
