Effective October 2, 2023, Brazil’s government will begin issuing new visas and residence permits specifically for nationals of member states of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries1 (“CPLP nationals”).2
Why this matters
The implementation of new visas and residence permits, like the CPLP countries, is aligned with focus areas discussed by the Brazilian government, facilitating employers' access to international talent, in a range of fields.
The new policies and procedures will make it easier for eligible CPLP nationals to enter Brazil for work purposes for a period of time.
More Details
CPLP Residence Visas will be available to highly-qualified technicians, teachers, business-people, cultural agents, exchange-program students, among others, from CPLP member states. The temporary visa will be valid for one year and will be exclusively granted:
I - by the Brazilian Embassies located: in Luanda; Praia, Bissau; Malabo, Maputo; São Tomé and Dili;
II - by the Consulates General of Brazil located: in Lisbon, Faro, and Porto.
Upon arrival in Brazil using a CPLP Residence Visa, the immigrant will be required to register with the Federal Police within 90 days of arrival. As for the national of a CPLP member state who is already in national territory, regardless of the migratory condition, he/she may request a residence permit directly from one of the Federal Police units.
The residence permit will have an initial duration of two years, making it possible for the immigrant to freely exercise a labor activity, in accordance with current legislation. After the temporary term, he or she is allowed to renew the permit for an indefinite term.
