The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a new consular support initiative specifically for Golden Visa holders, marking a significant expansion of the privileges available to long-term residents.  Announced during GITEX Global 2025, this initiative is the first of its kind in the region and reflects the UAE’s evolving approach to residency and global mobility.1  The programme is a joint effort between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and is designed to offer diplomatic assistance to Golden Visa holders while they are abroad.

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residency programme that grants eligible individuals such as investors, entrepreneurs, skilled professionals, and exceptional students renewable 10-year visas without the need for a local sponsor.  It offers a range of benefits including the ability to live, work, and study in the UAE, sponsor family members, and enjoy unrestricted travel in and out of the country.

      WHY THIS MATTERS

For Golden Visa holders, the availability of consular support provides them with a critical safety net while abroad, offering support in emergencies, faster resolution of travel issues, and access to diplomatic assistance in crisis situations.  This added layer of protection is intended to enhance the overall value of the Golden Visa and could be a factor in appealing to global talent to consider the UAE as a long-term base.

      Context

This initiative signals a major shift in how the UAE views its long-term residents.  By extending consular services – traditionally reserved for Emirati citizens – to Golden Visa holders, the UAE is expanding and reinforcing its commitment by means of enhancing its attention to and focus on the needs of its residents, including its Golden Visa holders.  This move aligns with the country’s broader strategic goals under the “Year of Community” initiative, which emphasises social cohesion and institutional support for all residents.2

      More Details

Emergency Return Document – The new consular services package includes several key features designed to support Golden Visa holders during international travel or emergencies.  One of the most practical offerings is the ability to obtain an emergency return document in the event of a lost or damaged passport.  This document can be requested through the MoFA website or mobile app and is issued electronically within 30 minutes, allowing the individual to return to the UAE without significant delay3.

24/7 Hotline – In addition, a dedicated 24/7 hotline has been launched to provide round-the-clock support. Golden Visa holders can call +971 2 493 1133 for assistance with general inquiries, emergency coordination, or evacuation procedures.  This hotline is staffed by trained personnel who can liaise with UAE embassies and consulates worldwide to help provide timely intervention when needed4.

Assistance During Crisis Situations – The UAE has also committed to providing support during international crises.  Whether due to natural disasters, political instability, or other emergencies, Golden Visa holders can now receive assistance from UAE diplomatic missions.  This includes help with evacuation logistics and coordination with local authorities to help ensure their safety5.

Event of Death – Finally, in the unfortunate event of a death abroad, the UAE will assist with the repatriation of remains.  This includes working with local authorities and the deceased’s family to arrange for transportation and burial or cremation, depending on the individual’s wishes and applicable regulations6.
