The Ministry of Interior (MoI) in Kuwait has introduced a new service enabling the transfer of sponsorship for domestic workers and drivers through the unified government electronic services application, Sahel.1

      WHY THIS MATTERS

This development introduces changes to sponsorship transfer procedures for domestic workers and drivers, which may be relevant for individuals seeking to adjust their household staffing arrangements. The electronic process may affect administrative processes and compliance tracking.

      Key Highlights

      • Single females and divorced or widowed females with children may transfer the sponsorship of one driver and one domestic worker.
      • Married, divorced, or widowed males are permitted to transfer the sponsorship of one driver and up to three domestic workers.
      • Single males may transfer the sponsorship of one driver only.
      • Transfers are conducted through the Sahel government services application, potentially reducing reliance on physical documentation and in-person visits.

      KPMG INSIGHTS

In light of the changes, organizations, entities, and individuals might consider the following:

      • Organizations could update their internal procedures for sponsoring domestic workers and drivers to incorporate the Sahel platform and communicate relevant eligibility criteria to employees.
      • Entities could monitor for any further clarifications or updates from the Ministry of Interior regarding documentation or process requirements.
      • Mobile employees could note changes in access and sponsorship requirements, particularly those in qualifying categories.

If assignees and/or their programme managers have any questions or concerns about the scope of the update, its application and potential impacts, and appropriate next steps, they should consult with their qualified immigration professional or a member of the GMS immigration team with KPMG in Kuwait (see the Contacts section).
