Effective January 1, 2026, Norway began imposing immigration application fees for children under the age of 18 applying for dependent permits (family immigration), a category that was previously fee exempt. Children must now pay half of the adult fee, aligning the cost structure with adult dependent permit processing while creating new compliance and budgeting considerations for affected families and employers.1, 2

      WHY THIS MATTERS

The introduction of application fees for children under the age of 18 applying for dependent permits may increase the overall cost of relocating employees with families to Norway. Employers sponsoring international assignments or intra-company transfers involving dependents should consider these fees in their mobility budgets for 2026 and beyond.

      Key Highlights

      New Fee Structure for Children

      • For first-time dependent permit applications, the application fee is NOK 5,950.
      • For renewal applications filed prior to the expiry of the existing permit, the application fee is NOK 2,200.

      Adult Dependent Permit Fees

      • For first‑time dependent permit applications, the application fee remains NOK 11,900.
      • For renewal applications, the application fee remains NOK 4,400.

      KPMG INSIGHTS

In light of the changes, organizations might consider the following:

      • Organizations may wish to review and update their mobility policies, budget forecasts, and employee briefings to reflect the new fee structure.
      • Organizations may wish to communicate these changes to affected employees to help prevent unexpected costs or delays in the application process.

If employers have questions or concerns, they may wish to consult their usual qualified immigration counsel or a member of the Immigration team with KPMG in Norway (see the Contacts section).
