On April 30, 2021, Chile’s tax authority extended the deadline to file 2020 Chilean annual income tax returns for companies and individuals to May 31, 2021.  The original deadline was April 30, 20211.

The extension measure has not been published in the country’s official gazette (Diario Oficial), but has only been announced by the tax authority.  However, the tax authority’s communications as featured on its website and social media indicate May 31 as the deadline.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The extended deadline provides relief to taxpayers who are having difficulties with meeting the original deadline due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  The Chilean tax authority has expressed that it will continue supporting social distancing and stay-at-home initiatives.

This is the first measure due to the pandemic whereby the deadline was extended one month.  It is noteworthy that the tax authority waited until April 30 to announce the extension.
