Anchored for growth: Strengthening Vårgrønn’s operating model in offshore wind

The opportunity: Creating enterprise foundations for operational scaling in offshore wind

Vårgrønn AS, a joint venture owned by Plenitude (Controlled by Eni) and HitecVision with a team of around 60 professionals across Norway and the UK. The business was evolving from early phase development to the ambition for large-scale offshore wind farms and growing fast through joint ventures. Rising electricity demand, government support schemes, and a strategic shift from energy transition toward energy security signaled growth opportunities. But there was volatility in the renewable energy sector, too.

The offshore wind industry was navigating supply-chain constraints and rising financing costs. There were also rapid regulatory changes and market uncertainties to consider. All of which demanded agility — as well as robust systems for operational stability and quick decision-making. Yet Vårgrønn's technology landscape was fragmented, and they had outgrown earlier tech solutions. In order to scale up, a more refined and unified technology solution was needed across the group.

Vårgrønn saw the urgency of building systems they could grow into, not grow out of. Vårgrønn’s growth ambitions highlighted the timeliness of acting now — choosing to transition while growing, rather than waiting until existing systems further constrained ambition.

Our response: A disciplined methodology delivering enterprise capabilities in tight timelines

KPMG in Norway approached Vårgrønn's transformation with a clear, disciplined approach, centered on SAP Cloud ERP and the SAP Activate standardized framework. By focusing on 'fit-to-standard' principles from the outset, KPMG professionals worked closely with Vårgrønn to identify immediate operational needs and ensured the new platform could support long-term growth.

They needed a cloud ERP system that could handle six critical business areas: Revenue processes, liquidity planning, asset management, procurement, financing, and investment management. And the tech solution needed to be scalable, standardized, aligned with industry best practice, cloud-based, future-aware in its infrastructure, and globally compliant.

Drawing on their established relationship and understanding of Vårgrønn’s business, KPMG professionals streamlined implementation, avoiding extended evaluation phases and maintaining momentum.

Our previous engagement with Vårgrønn gave us valuable insight into their needs. Through upfront preparation and training, we helped them understand SAP's standard capabilities, creating a collaborative environment where we could efficiently align their requirements with the system's functionality.

KPMG's experience proved crucial in mapping fragmented accounting structures into SAP’s unified framework, enabling consolidated reporting and robust financial control ready for future European expansion. When staffing changes took place mid-project, the unified system helped to ensure operational continuity through the onboarding of new service providers.

The outcome: Enterprise resilience built for renewable energy leadership

The project moved fast: After requirement and digital discovery assessments in late 2024, SAP Cloud ERP was selected in December with a successful go-live in June 2025. Vårgrønn was able to report Q2 2025 figures using the new system.

KPMG’s disciplined approach — prioritizing core requirements and avoiding customizations — ensured the project met its aggressive timeline. Core financial capabilities went live as planned, while specialized modules like treasury and advanced procurement are being rolled out in phases through Q4 2025.

With SAP Cloud ERP now unifying operations, Vårgrønn benefits from:

      • Consolidated financial control and reporting across Norwegian and UK entities

Real-time insights replacing manual cash flow forecasting

An intelligent treasury module to control investments, loans and guarantees

A standardized chart of accounts providing structure and clarity

A scalable platform to underpin supply chain, logistics and procurement processes

Strong foundations for future asset management and infrastructure growth

The project continues with KPMG working to optimize integrations in the system landscape surrounding SAP, including integration with Vårgrønn's data lake to further improve operational efficiency.

Thanks to the KPMG team’s hard work and advice, we now have the enterprise foundation that supports our processes in finance and procurement. The technology platform gives us a great starting point for growth, while it is fit for purpose in the current stage, it can also be scaled up to meet the future challenges when taking on complex construction and operating projects.
