Mexico –Visas Required for Brazilian Nationals Temporarily

GMS Flash Alert 2022-012 | 20 January 2022

The Mexico Ministry of Foreign Relations announced that as of December 11, 2021, Brazilian nationals who intend to enter Mexico as visitors must apply for an electronic or virtual Visa, regardless of the length of the stay in the country.1

The announcement, published in Mexico’s Official Gazette (Diario Oficial de la Federación) on November 26, 2021, temporarily suspends a 2004 agreement that had exempted Brazilian nationals entering Mexico for tourism or business from the visitor visa application process.

The change results from the immigration authorities detecting an increase of Brazilian nationals coming to Mexico for purposes other than for business or tourism.

Why this matters

Companies and individuals should be aware that the temporary suspension does not apply to individuals with Brazilian passports who:

  • have a valid work permit; or
  • hold a permanent resident status for immigration purposes in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, or any of the countries that are part of the Schengen Area, as well as countries that are members of the Pacific Alliance (Colombia, Chile, and Peru).
