The tripartite relation between employer, employee and trade unions has always been the essence of an effective organisation. With an intent to ease this relation and to protect the rights of workers, labour laws came into force many years back with various new additions / amendments over the passing years.

Labour laws in India have been governed by multiple legislations. With a view to harmonise and consolidate multiple labour legislations, 29 central laws have been amalgamated into following four labour codes.

  1. Code on Wages, 2019
  2. Code on Social Security, 2020
  1. Code on Occupational Safety, Health, and Working Conditions, 2020
  2. Industrial Relation Code, 2020

Rationalisation of compliances, introduction of new category of employees (such as platform workers, gig workers, etc.), beneficial provisions for employees and employers, electronic filings, etc. have been some other objectives of these newly enacted codes.
