Case study: Driving simplification for Donnafugata with SAP GROW
In 2024, KPMG Italy supported Donnafugata — one of Italy’s most recognized premium wine producers — in its digital transformation journey through the adoption of SAP Cloud ERP.
The initiative was launched to replace a highly customized legacy ERP platform that had supported the company for nearly 40 years. The objective was not only technological modernization, but also the simplification and standardization of business processes to support future growth with a more scalable and agile operating model.
Following an assessment of the existing application landscape and operational processes, KPMG professionals helped Donnafugata define a future-ready ERP roadmap based on fit-to-standard principles and a Clean Core approach.
The SAP Cloud ERP implementation covered several key business domains, including:
- Finance and controlling
- Procurement and supplier management
- Sales and order management
- Logistics and inventory management
- Production planning and execution
The program also included integration with selected legacy and external applications through SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), ensuring process continuity while maintaining architectural flexibility and scalability.
A core element of the transformation was the adoption of standardized SAP best practices, reducing unnecessary customization and enabling faster process execution, improved governance and greater operational visibility.
The project was structured around a phased transformation approach including:
- Fit-to-standard analysis and solution design
- System configuration and implementation
- Data migration and integration
- User training and testing
- Go-live and hypercare support
The initiative also established the foundation for future innovation initiatives, including advanced reporting and analytics capabilities, the evolution toward a corporate data warehouse and the adoption of SAP’s AI solution, SAP Joule to enhance user productivity and decision-making.
The transformation also laid the foundation for future strategic initiatives, including:
- Consolidation of inventory, production and laboratory systems
- Introduction of a corporate data warehouse
- Improved reporting, analytics and planning capabilities
Through this program, Donnafugata is positioning itself for long-term operational efficiency, improved scalability and a more agile digital operating model.
