The Brazilian authorities published announcements in the country’s Civil Office website on June 27 and 28, 2022, on new models of the national identity card1 and passport.2
Why this matters
Brazilian nationals living in or outside the country should be aware of the new identity card and passports so that they have valid documentation before travelling and applying for foreign visas. Companies should also be attentive to confirm whether they are using the proper documents for their employees and their dependents before starting international assignments.
More Details
Identity Card
The Brazilian national identity document, currently called “Registro Geral” or the RG (General Registration), will be gradually replaced by a new document called “Carteira de Identidade Nacional” (CIN (National ID Card)).
The identity document replacement will be free, and it will be done gradually, starting in the Brazilian states of: Acre, Pernambuco, Goiás, Distrito Federal, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Brazilian nationals living in any of these states and who already have a taxpayer number (known as “CPF”) will be able to request the CIN from their respective identification institute. The CIN will be issued beginning August 4, 2022.
The other states (Alagoas, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Paraíba, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rondônia, São Paulo, Sergipe and Tocantins) will also be able to issue the identity card by March 2023.
As the CIN implementation will be done gradually, the current national identity card (the RG) remains valid until 2032. Once a physical CIN is issued, the holder can also obtain a digital version through the government’s online portal (gov.br).
The new identity card comes with a QR Code that can be read easily and quickly, which provides more security for citizens. It will be possible to identify the authenticity of the document and to know if it was stolen or lost. The document also allows an easier identification of people with special needs.
Passport
The new Brazilian passport model will be issued starting in September 2022, and it will have a validity period of 10 years. This new model results from a partnership between the Brazilian Mint (”Casa da Moeda do Brasil”), Brazil’s Federal Police and Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it was produced using modern anti-fraud technology.
Safety is a key element of the new Brazilian passport booklet, which has new technologies to enhance security features, such as new artwork, laser-engraved personalization, and watermarks. The new passport follows a recommendation from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United Nations institution that defines the standard travel ID documents, of updating the national passport every 10 years.
