Make impact measurable
Stolt-Nielsen is a market leader in the logistics and distribution of bulk liquids. Transporting and storing products that touch millions of lives every day, Stolt-Nielsen is a part of global supply chains enabling essential industries and shaping modern life. With a global fleet of over 160 chemical tankers, state-of-the-art storage terminals offering nearly five million cbm of storage, and over 60,000 ISO tank containers, Stolt-Nielsen connects products to people across the globe. Stolt-Nielsen also cultivates value through a range of adjacent investments.
When the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) raised the bar for sustainability reporting, the organization saw more than a reporting challenge. It saw an opportunity to connect teams, align decision-making, and build a blueprint for more confident action.
Working alongside Microsoft, KPMG Netherlands helped Stolt-Nielsen turn its scattered ESG data into practical insight. Making compliance the departure point for transformation — not the destination.

ESG data scattered across divisions
New CSRD regulations meant a big step up for sustainability reporting. But Stolt-Nielsen’s data was scattered across divisions, departments and functions, each operating independently. It was hard to see a consistent, reliable view of the data, and compliance was a complex, time-consuming effort.
Stolt-Nielsen knew meeting CSRD was essential. But it was KPMG professionals’ experience — their deep regulatory knowledge and cross-functional blueprinting — that revealed a bigger long-term opportunity: to transform scattered ESG data not just for compliance, but for strategic insight and transparent decision-making around ESG.
A fast, foundations-first transformation for enterprise-wide sustainability data
KPMG Netherlands was already supporting Stolt-Nielsen with its materiality assessment, so the teams were able to move quickly when CSRD landed. Together, they mapped where ESG data lived and used that visibility to design stronger strategic data foundations.
Rather than starting with software, KPMG brought ESG, finance transformation and Microsoft specialists to clarify processes, roles and responsibilities, strengthen controls, and connect the moving parts end-to-end. Microsoft Sustainability Manager and Microsoft Fabric provided the unified platform to bring it to life.
The solution brings together non-financial data across the enterprise for the first time.
Audit-ready reporting and a platform for steering the business
In seven months, Stolt-Nielsen went from spreadsheets to audit-ready, CSRD-compliant reports across divisions, enabling teams to spot ESG risks and identify ESG opportunities from a consolidated perspective they couldn’t see before.
As the platform matures, it can help leaders steer the company with real-time data, model scenarios and track trends. The work has also become a proof of concept for broader transformation initiatives, including exploring AI for supplier data capturing and automating carbon calculations.
