For the past thirteen years, KPMG’s Tech Innovator awards have uncovered some of the most exciting and innovative tech-based scale-ups and start-ups the UK has to offer. This year, could that be you?

Every year, the sheer variety and breadth of ingenuity and entrepreneurial drive on display is remarkable – from last year’s winner, Inicio AI, a female-founded business whose virtual agent gives a more sympathetic and constructive ear to customers with affordability problems, to previous winners that include Halocycle, a cleantech start-up offering plastic recycling solutions and HiirROC, a Hull based scaleup with its own proprietary process for developing affordable clean hydrogen.

As with Inicio in 2025, increasing numbers of entries are from AI-related businesses. That’s exciting because it shows the AI hype is not just hype – it’s real and is inspiring more and more entrepreneurs and innovators to reimagine how things can be done in pursuit of smarter insights, greater productivity and better outcomes for people and businesses.

What makes the Tech Innovator competition so powerful is that we receive entries from a complete spread of sectors and all regions of the country. The UK awards attract upwards of 200 entries every year, with around half of those usually coming from London and the South East and the rest spread around the UK’s other big cities and regions. That’s a pattern that broadly reflects the overall demographics of the UK’s scale-up enterprise market: London leading the way but other cities including Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds thriving as hotspots.

      Simple entry criteria

To put yourself forward, there are a few simple criteria to meet. You must be a start-up or scale-up operating for seven years or less in your present form, be UK registered, and have revenue of between $1 million and $15 million (or have raised at least $500,000 in equity). You must either be a pure technology business or be tech-enabled, tech-driven or tech-led.

If you meet those requirements, you simply need to complete an online application telling us about your business. The deadline for entries is coming up soon on Sunday 5 April – so act quickly if you’re interested!

Your application will be reviewed by a mix of KPMG and industry experts – but what will they be looking for? Key criteria include evidence of commerciality and financial potential, market traction, customer adoption, ESG credentials and application/pitch quality.

Our judges whittle the entries down to a shortlist, with those companies presenting at one of eight regional heats held in April/May at KPMG hubs around the country. The winners then compete at the national final in London in June.

      National and global opportunities

It doesn’t stop there – because the UK winner is then put forward to the global KPMG competition where over 20 national winners from around the world compete for the global prize! This will be held in the fantastic city of Lisbon in November – where winners will present at the final and participate in a week of events including investor meetings and workshops.

So, what’s on offer to the brilliant companies that enter? The awards generate superb exposure for entrants, from extensive networking opportunities with investors and other founders/entrepreneurs to media and social media publicity. The celebration dinner we hold every year for UK finalists is always a fabulous event attended by a wealth of people associated with the start-up and scale-up ecosystem including funders and investors.

      Take the leap

Ultimately, you have nothing to lose and potentially everything to gain by entering!

We’d love you hear about your great idea and your journey so far. Making that application will not take long – and could turn out to be one of your best business decisions.
