Case study - Charting Ireland's gigawatt-scale green energy transition

Before icon

Prior to KPMG's engagement, a plan for a green energy hub in Ireland's southern region was outlined. The initiative aims to harness offshore wind energy to produce green hydrogen, serving as a pivotal resource for strategic, long-term energy storage, ensuring firm carbon-free electricity generation, and facilitating the decarbonisation of local industries. These proposed endeavours are poised to significantly advance Ireland's net-zero ambitions while concurrently bolstering energy security.

KPMG undertook a feasibility study with an integrated service offering providing a thorough assessment across technical, planning, commercial, and economic dimensions. The project began by defining goals, aligning with national policies, and identifying stakeholders.

KPMG worked with a partner to provide specialist advise in relation to the technical analysis which involved overseeing the development of an energy balance model to estimate infrastructure size and costs. Planning and spatial assessments considered policy reviews and site constraints for strategic energy use.

Economic appraisal focused on societal benefits, supporting engagement with state bodies, partners, and local communities. Commercial appraisal explored strategic options and structures for a nascent hydrogen market, within regulatory and policy frameworks.

Post KPMG's assessment, the client can now proceed with confidence in their green energy hub project. We have defined clear goals, assessed policy alignment, and identified stakeholders.

Our technical analysis ensured accurate infrastructure sizing and cost estimates. Through planning and spatial considerations, we've addressed site constraints. Economic and commercial appraisals have highlighted societal benefits and strategic options for entering the hydrogen market.

KPMG's integrated service offering provides actionable insights for future planning, commercial structuring, and regulatory compliance, ensuring alignment with best practices in business case development for sustainable energy systems.
