The story of the North West has always been one of reinvention - a region built on industry, defined by creativity and powered by a determination to move forward. Today, that same spirit is unmistakable as the region steps confidently into its next phase of growth.

Across the North West, momentum feels tangible. Manchester’s tech and fintech ecosystem is scaling rapidly, supported by one of the UK’s most dynamic digital communities. Liverpool’s life sciences cluster is earning global attention. Cheshire continues to lead in chemicals and pharmaceuticals, while Lancashire’s engineering heritage is evolving into advanced manufacturing. And with major strategic initiatives like Atom Valley taking shape, creating a new hub for innovation and manufacturing in Greater Manchester, the region is building the infrastructure and investment environment that supports long‑term private‑sector growth.

      Confidence built on progress

That visible progress is shaping how businesses across the region think about the future. Organisations aren’t just optimistic - they’re acting on their ambition. With 90% of North West businesses confident about the road ahead, and 80% expecting earnings to rise, this is a region where confidence is rooted in real performance, not projections.

Leaders across factories, labs and offices from Lancaster to Liverpool are seeing fuller order books, expanding markets and clearer pathways to scale. And as large‑scale developments and transport commitments gather pace, businesses feel they’re operating in a region that has momentum behind it, not just from industry, but from infrastructure.

The Government’s renewed commitment to Northern Powerhouse Rail reinforces that momentum. Faster, more reliable east‑west connectivity between the region’s major cities and growth corridors will expand access to talent, improve productivity and unlock new commercial opportunities. For a region already moving quickly, this kind of connectivity strengthens the foundations for sustained expansion.

And this momentum is visible well beyond large strategic schemes. In Manchester, Ancoats is rapidly emerging as a major tech hub, combining its industrial roots with cutting‑edge digital infrastructure. With government investment set to bring around 7,000 civil‑service roles - many in digital and data - into a new campus there, the area is becoming an ideal base for data‑driven businesses and a natural home for a potential Data Centre of Excellence.

      Innovation with intent

Innovation isn’t new to the North West - it’s embedded in its identity. But today, that ingenuity is manifesting in a new wave of digital and scientific transformation.

You see it in Manchester’s Innovation District and the creative, data‑rich energy of MediaCity. You see it in Liverpool’s pioneering work in life sciences and health technology. You see it in the advanced chemical and pharmaceutical research taking place across Cheshire. And underpinning this ecosystem is a growing focus on digital resilience, supported by initiatives like the North West Cyber Resilience Centre – the UK’s first regional hub dedicated to helping SMEs adopt technology safely through practical guidance, digital‑footprint assessments and accessible cyber support.

Businesses are backing this shift with investment: 41% prioritising technology and 39% focusing on AI, both above national averages. Crucially, innovation here is deliberate. As organisations adopt AI, automation and advanced data tools, they’re also strengthening cybersecurity and building more resilient operational systems. Growth is happening with stability built in - a hallmark of the region’s measured, purposeful approach.

      Powered by people

Every leap in AI, every research breakthrough and every expansion plan is driven by the people who make the North West what it is.

With 53% of businesses confident in their ability to recruit, the region continues to attract skilled professionals, founders and graduates who want to work where innovation is real and opportunity is growing. Universities across Manchester, Liverpool and Lancashire are producing engineers, scientists, data specialists, creatives and business leaders who slot seamlessly into the region’s evolving industries.

People don’t choose the North West for jobs alone. They choose it because it feels like a place where momentum is happening around them - where careers grow alongside communities, and where ambition is matched by identity.

A region defining its future, not waiting for it

Across Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, Lancashire and Cheshire, regeneration programmes are transforming neighbourhoods, energising industries and creating space for business to grow. Public and private investment is flowing into digital infrastructure, transport, skills and innovation.

Initiatives like Atom Valley sit at the heart of this transformation, strengthening the region’s manufacturing and innovation capacity and signalling to investors that the North West is building for the long term. And in Manchester, the Etihad Campus shows how regeneration extends beyond traditional industry. As a growing centre for sports innovation, education and commercial activity, it demonstrates how world‑class leisure and community assets can act as engines of business growth and collaboration. Meanwhile, the delivery of Northern Powerhouse Rail promises to amplify these efforts by unlocking better connectivity, improving access to talent and linking the region more tightly to national and global markets.

Taken together, these developments reflect a region setting its own trajectory. Universities, businesses and civic leaders are working collaboratively with a shared sense of purpose, turning potential into progress, and progress into long‑term prosperity.

A region shaping the UK’s next era of growth

The momentum we’re seeing across the North West is not only strengthening the region’s position within the UK - it’s extending its influence globally. The Port of Liverpool, which now handles 45% of all UK–US cargo, is expanding its role as a strategic gateway for transatlantic trade. With the maritime sector generating £3.4 billion in turnover in 2025 and multimodal routes saving businesses around 200 road miles per journey, the region is becoming one of the most efficient ways for firms to connect to international markets. This blend of domestic confidence and global reach shows how innovation, investment and identity are moving forward together, and why the North West is increasingly poised to help define the UK’s next era of growth.
