The discussion provided a practical perspective on how these areas can support businesses in strengthening resilience and translating sustainability ambitions into action.

      Understanding Malta’s hospitality landscape

The session began by examining the sustainability challenges affecting Malta’s hospitality sector. The discussion considered the physical risks that climate change presents to tourism, alongside growing pressure on resources such as water, electricity and labour availability.

Participants were encouraged to consider sustainability not only as an environmental responsibility, but also as an important component of business resilience. This perspective highlighted how responding to resource constraints and operational risks can support the long-term stability of hospitality businesses.

Identifying opportunities for greater resource efficiency

A central part of the session focused on practical opportunities relating to energy, water and food circularity.

The energy discussion explored energy efficiency measures through which hotels and restaurants can reduce electricity consumption and associated costs, including efficient lighting, improved building insulation and occupancy-based controls.

Water-related opportunities included improvements to laundry operations and the potential use of greywater recycling. The session also considered food circularity initiatives, including the donation or sale of surplus food and the use of seasonal and locally sourced products.

These examples demonstrated how hospitality businesses can begin integrating sustainability into their day-to-day operations through initiatives connected to resource efficiency and waste reduction.

      Turning opportunities into action

The discussion then moved from identifying opportunities to implementing and monitoring them. Participants considered the importance of measuring performance through relevant key performance indicators, establishing an initial baseline and setting targets against which progress can be tracked.

The session also opened the discussion to the challenges experienced by MHRA members, including potential barriers such as cost, limited data, insufficient government support and difficulties in measuring the return on sustainability-related investments.

      Exploring sustainability funding opportunities

The training included an overview of domestic incentives and EU funding schemes relevant to the sustainability measures discussed during the session. This connected the operational opportunities presented with potential sources of support available to businesses seeking to undertake sustainability-related investments.

      MHRA Sustainability Training: Networking

      Continuing the sustainability conversation

The session concluded with a question-and-answer discussion, providing participants with an opportunity to raise questions and consider how the topics covered could apply within their own organisations. The programme also included a networking break for attendees.

Through practical discussions on resource efficiency, performance measurement and funding opportunities, the session supported continued dialogue on how Malta’s hospitality sector can strengthen its resilience and translate sustainability ambitions into action.
