The retail industry is entering a new era defined by artificial intelligence, data-driven decision making and evolving customer expectations. Discussions at NRF 2026: Retail's Big Show Asia Pacific highlighted that retail is no longer centred solely on products and transactions. Instead, retailers are building connected ecosystems that combine technology, customer experience, trust, fulfilment and operational excellence to create sustainable competitive advantage.

Across the event, a common theme emerged: retailers are moving from experimentation to execution. AI adoption is accelerating, omnichannel capabilities are becoming foundational, and customer trust is increasingly influencing brand relevance and long-term growth. At the same time, the rise of autonomous agents, data-intensive operating models and new global competitors is reshaping how value is created and captured across the retail ecosystem.

How retailers can move beyond AI pilots to enterprise-wide transformation by aligning AI initiatives with business priorities, connected data, and scalable operating models

      Key themes

      • Rise of Asian brands

A new wave of Asian brands is emerging globally, moving beyond domestic success to actively expand into western markets and build global relevance. Over the next decade, more brands with authentic local heritage are expected to reach global audiences, shifting the balance away from traditional western dominance and leveraging global platforms to accelerate entry into new markets

      • Data or disappear: Clean data as retail's new survival layer

AI is only as good as the data foundation beneath it. Fragmented, incomplete or poorly governed data limits every downstream use case. Better master data and governance can materially improve operating speed and coordination across markets and channels, while poor product data can make a brand invisible in recommendation and purchase flows

      • The rise of Agentic commerce

Agentic AI is creating a fundamental shift in how customers discover, evaluate and buy, with autonomous assistants increasingly mediating commerce decisions. As agents become the front door to shopping, retailers need to rethink where value accrues and how to remain visible and relevant in the customer journey. Omni-channel retailers may be advantaged because they combine rich customer data, multiple touchpoints and physical fulfillment, which agentic commerce depends on

      • Invisible tech, human magic

The best retail technology should remove friction in the background while strengthening human experience rather than replacing it. In luxury and premium retail, human interaction is positioned as a core part of the value proposition, with human service becoming a ‘luxury’ in itself. As automation expands, the last mile of judgment, service, creativity and brand experience remains distinctly human

      • Trust is the new currency

As AI agents increasingly make decisions on behalf of consumers, both the economic value of trust and the relationship of trust between consumers, brands and platforms are expected to fundamentally evolve. Customers' trust includes reliable fulfillment, secure data use and consistent experience across channels. Retailers with trusted brands and loyalty ecosystems may be better placed in an agent-led future, while cybersecurity risks from deepfakes, AI-enabled threat actors and third-party ecosystems continue to grow

      • Omnichannel is the new operating system

Omni-channel excellence is no longer a customer-facing feature; it is the enterprise backbone for modern retail. Leading retailers are aligning inventory, fulfillment, customer data, store operations and digital journeys so customers no longer experience separate channels. Physical stores remain strategic assets, serving as fulfillment infrastructure, trust anchors, experience centres and part of the data loop. Unified data, infrastructure and supply chain capabilities are foundational to both omnichannel success and future agentic commerce

      • AI as a partner to employees (Not a Replacement)

AI is changing how people work rather than replacing roles. In supply chain transformation, AI is positioned as handling routine optimisation, while humans remain essential for complex decisions. AI handles routine work and humans act as escalation for judgement-heavy decisions, making work easier and more fulfilling while reducing friction across daily activities

      • Retail as experience, ecosystem, and influence

Retail is moving beyond a narrow view of transactional commerce. The strongest brands are building experiences, communities, ecosystems and cultural relevance, not just selling products. Retail media, marketplaces, loyalty platforms and adjacent services are expanding the retailer's role into a broader ecosystem that generates value beyond the initial transaction. Physical retail remains relevant when it offers discovery, human interaction and memorable moments that digital channels alone cannot replicate

      • Speed wins: From insight to action in minutes

AI is compressing cycle times across retail, from identifying trends, forecasting demand and adapting assortments to summarising reports and acting on customer signals. Organisations are moving away from dashboards and static reporting toward models where insights automatically trigger operational decisions, recommendations or escalation paths. Agents can proactively surface signals, personalise the customer experience and enable real-time response instead of reactive, delayed analysis

      Key takeaways

Retail's next phase is expected to be defined by the organisations that successfully combine clean data, trusted brands, omnichannel capabilities, agentic AI and differentiated human experiences. The competitive advantage is expected to not come from technology alone, but from the ability to integrate technology, trust, people and execution into a connected retail ecosystem.
