Our activities for the environment
For Better. We do what really matters - at KPMG, this also applies to our approach to the environment. As part of our environmental programme, we aim for economically efficient, socially acceptable and ecologically effective measures that make a sustainable contribution to improving our environmental impact. This includes in particular the reduction of climate-damaging CO2 emissions as well as expertise in sustainability consulting for our clients.
We are certified
We are committed to taking responsibility for our natural resources. With our ISO 14001-certified environmental management system, we are able to continuously scrutinise and improve KPMG's business processes with regard to their environmental impact. The scope of the management system includes all locations of KPMG and its affiliates in Germany (excluding temporary locations). The management system covers all environmental impacts and energy consumption caused by the provision of audit, tax and advisory services that KPMG can directly influence or control.
We want to promote environmental awareness among our employees and thus bring about a change in their way of thinking and behaving with regard to environmental sustainability. With our environmental measures, we show our employees possibilities for a conscious use of energy and resources: Because each and every one of us can make an individual contribution to continuously improve our environmental performance.
Our goals for the environment
KPMG International sets specific goals for the global KPMG organisation to protect the environment. In autumn 2020, a landmark decision was made: KPMG is to become carbon neutral globally by 2030. This commitment is a milestone on our path to a sustainable future.
To achieve this goal, KPMG International is joining, among others, the Science Based Targets initiative, which is committed to making science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions a standard of corporate practice. In accordance with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, global warming is to be limited to significantly less than 2 degrees or 1.5 degrees. We can achieve this 1.5 degree target if we reduce our direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2030.
In addition, KPMG member companies have set the following targets:
- 100 per cent renewable energy in Global Board countries by 2022, and in all other member firms by 2030.
- Offset remaining, unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in the form of investments in selected climate protection projects.
We successfully completed the national Environment 2020 programme in the 2020 financial year. We are currently working on a new national environmental programme at KPMG in Germany that takes the new global target into account. The areas of mobility, energy and resources will remain an important part of our activities to continuously reduce our environmental impact.
