While I spent my career in audit, my experience in KPMG went way beyond audit. From attending board meetings, chairing the KPMG Recreation Club (Rec Club) and rallying our Partners to champion a sport, there's hardly a dull moment here.
One of my proudest accomplishments is reviving our Rec Club. It started as an idea at a time when sports and recreation played little part in work life. No teams, no regular events, just a once-a-year beach party. So I worked with the Rec Club President to secure budgets, form committees, appoint captains and coaches, and even got jerseys made.
In the years I was involved, which spanned more than a decade, we went from a ragtag contender to winning eight Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) Games championships. More importantly, we forged a strong sense of community and a sporting culture that continues to flourish today.
In the days leading to my retirement, I have been most gratified to hear from some younger colleagues that I had a hand in nurturing them in their career. I had personally sponsored the admission of 10 or so Partners, many of whom hold leadership roles today. Stewardship dictates that we leave the partnership in a better place than when we first got here.
