A new call for proposals aimed at advancing the electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing has been launched. The call is targeted at entities intending to undertake investment projects within the Member States of the European Union or the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA).
Electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing
The support is available for projects related to the manufacturing of electric vehicle (EV) battery cells. For the purposes of the call, the ‘electric vehicle battery’ means a battery that is specifically designed to provide electric power for traction in hybrid or electric vehicles of categories L, M, N or O. Optionally, the projects can cover components such as anode, cathode, electrolyte, separator and cell-casing materials, as well as recycled batteries and battery materials.
Eligible costs encompass various categories of expenditure required to implement the project, including, but not limited to, construction costs, infrastructure expenses such as land acquisition, site preparation and development, as well as environmental components. This category also includes utilities, transport infrastructure, security systems and infrastructure, communications infrastructure, drainage and sewerage systems, lighting, fencing, waste management infrastructure, fire safety installations, and accessibility provisions. Costs related to obtaining the necessary permits, conducting environmental assessments, and acquiring equipment and intangible assets are also included.
The total funding available under the call is EUR 1 billion. The minimum eligible value of the total capital expenditure is EUR 2.5 million. Up to 60% of the relevant costs will be supported. The call is directly managed by the European Commission.
The call lasts from 3 December 2024 to 24 April 2025, 5 PM, which gives the applicants over four months to prepare and make submissions.
Simultaneously, the European Commission has launched five calls to support projects related to Net-Zero technologies. EUR 2.4 billion will be available, with eligible capital expenditure ranging from EUR 2.5 million to over EUR 100 million.
