Many Business Central projects in small and medium-sized enterprises fail because artificial intelligence and automation are incorporated into the plans too late. Business Central projects are ERP initiatives based on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, a cloud-based platform that consolidates key business processes such as finance, procurement, sales and logistics into a single system.

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is currently undergoing a shift in its role: what was previously purely an administrative system is becoming an assistance system that automates routines and detects anomalies at an early stage. Those who integrate AI from the outset reduce complexity and costs. Those who retrofit the system only after going live accumulate technical debt.

The white paper “AI makes ERP faster” explains why the timing of the system’s transformation is crucial and outlines a structured approach. Our experience of working with medium-sized enterprises, current market data and developments relating to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Copilot and the Power Platform form the basis of this white paper.

ERP transformation in figures: What studies and market data reveal

      • According to the 2025/2026 Skilled Labour Report by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), the shortage of qualified skilled workers remains a challenge, particularly for many SMEs.
      • According to the DIHK’s 2025 Digitalisation Survey, 41 per cent of companies that are already putting AI to practical use rate the impact on productivity as high.
      • A study by the market research and consultancy firm Forrester, commissioned by Microsoft, estimates the savings in the finance department resulting from automation following migration to Business Central at around 25 hours per month per employee, with a payback period of 16 months – depending on process maturity and data quality.
      • Market researchers at Gartner expect that by 2028, at least 15 per cent of daily work-related decisions will be made autonomously by AI agents, compared with zero per cent in 2024.

How organisations can manage their Business Central transformation

The groundwork should be laid at the outset. AI only delivers reliable results if master data has been cleaned up and core processes standardised. This is the foundation on which Microsoft’s software technologies, which integrate seamlessly, are built: Business Central forms the cloud-based, lean core. Copilot brings AI directly into the user interface, understands natural language and provides posting suggestions as well as alerts regarding discrepancies. The Power Platform extends the system using low-code technology, enabling business units to build their own applications and become co-developers. In one of our projects, a manufacturing company with around 250 employees reduced the manual effort involved in accounts payable processing by around 45 per cent and completed monthly financial statements more quickly.
