      Australia’s energy landscape

Global energy demand continued to rise in 2025, while energy systems became increasingly focused on security, affordability and resilience. Alongside this, Australia remained a leading exporter of coal and LNG, and the world’s top solar generator on a per capita basis.

However, Australia’s energy mix is evolving. Growing electrification, rising renewable generation and world-leading critical mineral resources are creating new opportunities at a time where energy security, infrastructure investment and changing global trade dynamics are influencing the pace and direction of the energy transition.

Rather than a single energy transition, we are now seeing countries adopt diverse and sometimes conflicting approaches to the energy transition, driven by geopolitics, security, natural resources and climate ambition. Through our collaboration with the Energy Institute and insights from the Statistical Review of World Energy, we are helping organisations understand and prepare for how global trends are shaping Australia's energy future and the opportunities that lie ahead.

      FAQs

Renewable energy accounted for approximately 40% of Australia’s electricity generation in 2025.

Australia plays a key role through its renewable energy resources, critical mineral production, LNG exports and growing contribution to low-carbon electricity generation.

Critical minerals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper are essential inputs for batteries, renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles and advanced manufacturing.

Yes. Energy-related emissions declined by 1.1% in 2025 and have fallen on average by 0.7% annually over the past decade.

Renewable energy, battery storage, electrification and critical minerals development are among Australia’s most significant opportunities.

As energy markets become more complex, organisations are balancing security, resilience, investment priorities and supply chain challenges in an increasingly uncertain environment.

Key challenges include oil import dependence, transmission infrastructure constraints, supply chain resilience and balancing affordability with decarbonisation objectives.

Renewable energy is expected to continue growing, supported by electrification, storage deployment and investment in transmission infrastructure, while fossil fuels remain part of the energy system during the transition period.
