Australia: Legislation including “Buy Now, Pay Later” and build-to-rent measures introduced to Parliament

Legislation containing several measures has been introduced in the House of Representatives, and subsequently referred to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee for inquiry.

Aside from the “Buy Now, Pay Later” measures, the Treasury Laws Amendment (Responsible Buy Now Pay Later and Other Measures) Bill 2024, which was introduced alongside the Capital Works (Build to Rent Misuse Tax) Bill 2024, contains other measures including:

  • Build-to-rent (BTR) incentives
  • AU$20,000 instant asset write-off for small business entities
  • Medicare levy exemption for lump sum payments
  • Country-by-country (CbC) reporting for certain multinational enterprises

The Senate Committee is expected to publish its report on 24 June 2024.
