Discussion paper increases the focus on the retirement phase

The federal government released a discussion paper for consultation on improving the retirement phase of superannuation. Read the Treasury release

According to the discussion paper [PDF 600 KB], much of the focus of trustees of superannuation funds, governments, and regulators to date has been on refining the accumulation phase, but comparatively there has been less consideration for the retirement phase of superannuation.

According to Treasury, the discussion paper increases the focus on the retirement phase by examining three key areas:

  • Supporting members to navigate the retirement income system
  • Supporting funds to deliver better retirement income products and services
  • Making lifetime income products more accessible

The consultation period ends 9 February 2024.
