IRS updates process for requesting information related to tax-exempt organizations

Revised Form 4506-B

IRS updates process for requesting information

The IRS today announced that it has updated the process for taxpayers to request information related to tax-exempt organizations, including a revised Form 4506-B (updated August 2023) [PDF 647 KB].

Background

The primary source for publicly available data on tax-exempt organizations is the Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS) tool, which includes data on electronically filed exempt organization returns (Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, 990-T (for section 501(c)(3) organizations), and 990-N received in 2017 or later can be viewed individually and as bulk data downloads), as well as determination letters issued since January 1, 2014.

Taxpayers can request copies of returns that are not available on TEOS using Form 4506-A [PDF 643 KB], and taxpayers can request a copy of an organization’s exemption application or determination letter using Form 4506-B.

More information about requesting information related to tax-exempt organizations can be found on a dedicated IRS website.
