Germany: CRS reporting deadline extended to 31 August 2023

Reporting deadline for the 2022 reporting period

Germany’s federal central tax office (BZSt) on 10 July 2023 issued guidance—CRS Newsletter 02/2023—that includes updates regarding the reporting deadline for the 2022 reporting period. Notably, the common reporting standard (CRS) deadline has been extended to 31 August 2023.

Generally, reporting financial institutions generally must transmit information on financial accounts to the BZSt as of 31 July. However, because the final BZSt state exchange list publication for the 2022 reporting period is expected to be delayed until the end of July 2023, it is permissible for reports to be transmitted to the BZSt by 31 August 2023.

In addition, CRS Newsletter 02/2023 cautions taxpayers that the sole attempt to transmit the reports will not be sufficient to meet the deadline. The final 2023 state exchange list will soon be published on the official BZSt website.
