Nominated in November 2022 to be the Commissioner of Internal Revenue, Werfel will complete the remainder of a five-year term that began November 13, 2022. Since that time, Douglas O’Donnell has served as Acting Commissioner of the IRS.
One of Werfel’s early tasks will be producing a plan for utilizing the $79.6 billion in additional funds appropriated for the IRS in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Werfel has served in a variety of leadership roles in the federal government and private sector. In 2009, he was nominated by President Obama to be the Controller of the Office of Management and Budget, a post he served in for four years before becoming Acting Commissioner of the IRS in 2013.
