As an IT auditor in KPMG in Singapore’s Technology Assurance team, Clarissa Goenawan brings precision and professionalism to her client work. Yet her impact goes far beyond her professional capacity — she’s also a driving force behind building a workplace where people feel connected, supported, and inspired to unlock their creative potential.

“When employees feel valued and know their well-being matters, they’re more likely to stay and thrive,” Clarissa explains, adding that such an environment not only fosters a sense of belonging, but can also help ideas flow and become more innovative when people have the space to relax and refocus.

Through her active role in the firm-wide Recreation Club and her business unit, she has helped design experiences — from team outings to overseas trips — that are intentionally crafted to spark energy and collaboration.

Earlier this year, she and TechAssurance Rec Club organised a department trip to Jeju, where they spent three days on the island. Apart from a break away from Singapore, the trip’s itinerary was planned intentionally and carefully.

“We had to think about the purpose behind every activities,” she explains. “It’s about creating moments that inspire people to collaborate, connect, and think differently. It is also about being intentional—every detail, from the itinerary to the way we communicate, shapes the experience.”

These experiences matter because creativity thrives in environments where people feel safe, supported, and energised. “Sometimes, stepping away from the desk is what unlocks fresh ideas,” Clarissa says. “When we’re relaxed, a spark of creativity can just come to us, and we can see problems from new angles. It may not happen instantaneously, but creating the right environment is crucial to how innovation starts.”

Having worked as a freelancer before joining KPMG, Clarissa appreciates being part of a multinational corporation where she can collaborate with many colleagues. These experiences have expanded her network, deepened trust with colleagues and strengthened her confidence in working as a team.

“Supportive colleagues at work make all the difference – these are not just friendships but are essential for success in client engagements and cross-functional collaborations. Having colleagues that work alongside you or come from different areas of work gives me an opportunity to bounce off ideas with them and get suggestions on how we can improve. Every engagement has its own challenges, but when you know you are not in it alone, you will be much more willing to try and experiment with new things."

“As humans, we often try to do everything ourselves and push our limits. But it’s just as important to recognise when to lean on others – learning to ask for help,” she said.

Clarissa’s efforts reflect a broader commitment at KPMG to create a workplace where people feel supported and empowered. The firm’s People and Culture strategy places strong emphasis on well-being, inclusion, and collaboration — recognising that these elements are critical to driving performance and innovation. Through initiatives like the Recreation Club, KPMG fosters opportunities for employees to recharge, connect, and build trust beyond their day-to-day roles.

On top of overseas trips, Clarissa and Recreation Club Team also helps to organise activities in Singapore for employees to bond and recharge.

Clarissa believes that these are valuable opportunities for teams to connect beyond their usual work remit. Interacting with colleagues from other departments helps employees understand the firm’s services better and can spark new ideas that enhance client conversations.

A company’s success is a collective effort. It’s about creating an environment where people want to stay, grow, and do their best work.
