      Portgás

      KPMG is delighted to work side by side with stakeholders who are committed to a promising future.

      Portgás was determined to convey an image of transparency to the community and its stakeholders, describing the reality of its decarbonisation process in a transparent and uncomplicated way.

      Thank you, Portgás!

      We spoke to Nuno Fitas Mendes, Managing Director of Portgás, who told us what it was like to use KPMG's True Value methodology

      Read testimonial here:

      • How did you arrive at the idea of using KPMG's True Value methodology, in a disruptive approach to quantifying impacts in Portugal, in this case in a sector as high-profile as Natural Gas distribution where REN Portgás operates?

        The idea grew out of the need for traditional companies in the utilities sector to communicate credibly to the community how they produce and deliver Value during the decarbonisation process. It was a question of describing what we do in a new language that could be understood by various institutional stakeholders.

      • What were the main challenges and opportunities from the initial idea through to effective measurement and monetisation of Portgás' externalities?

        The main challenge was to get the internal team to speak in a macroeconomic language less connected to their usual everyday processes. To convey the idea that the company's value is measured not just by its processes and profits, but above all by its impact on the community.

      • What advice could you give to other Portuguese companies which are thinking of using the True Value methodology to make a thorough assessment of their impacts, enabling them to take better informed decisions?

        Three things:

        1. Test out the methodology at an early stage and don't content yourselves with the first findings;
        2. Challenge received ideas about where the company's value lies;
        3. Commit to changing some of the metrics so that the project lives on in the business.
      • What was KPMG's contribution over the course of this process?

        Definitively, the store of knowledge that KPMG brought to the project and the methodological certainty that we weren't deviating from standards or measuring artificial value.

      KPMG was also willing, as part of its working method, to look at other perspectives which, when added to the core True Value methodology, can complement the findings and the final project outlook."
