To find out how compliance leaders are addressing complex challenges, KPMG Netherlands surveyed 105 Chief Ethics and Compliance Officers (CCOs) representative of the largest companies from the Netherlands, operating in six industries, in late 2024.
Respondents from this year’s survey anticipate pressures of heightened regulatory expectations and scrutiny over the next two years. New regulations are seen as the biggest challenge alongside strengthening data accuracy and completeness.
Strategically, CCOs are honing in on critical areas of improvement, with data privacy taking a prominent role. This underscores the market's dedication to safeguarding sensitive information and compliance with GDPR. Simultaneously, there's a focused commitment to cybersecurity, which reflects a proactive stance against escalating digital threats. Technology assumes a pivotal role, with CCOs foreseeing an increased budget — a strategic acknowledgment of technology's integral role within compliance.
Beyond the strategic focus, the survey explores emerging challenges. CCOs should be prepared to navigate emerging risk areas, such as ESG, that affect their organization’s operations in new and unforeseen ways. When it comes to ESG compliance, most organizations are still at planning or implementation stage, with more work required before ESG programs are fully developed and operational.
