More than a Century of Service

For over 125 years, our firm has evolved alongside Sri Lanka’s economic and professional development. From a small accounting practice during the colonial trading era to one of the country’s largest professional services firms today, we have remained committed to integrity, professionalism and public trust.

Our journey reflects not only the growth of our firm but also the evolution of Sri Lanka’s accounting and financial landscape.

      The Beginning of the Firm

The origins of KPMG in Sri Lanka date back to 1897, when F. P. Church established Church & Co., a small public accounting practice. During this time, Sri Lanka’s expanding trading economy created an increasing need for professional financial oversight and compliance services.

In 1910, Ford Rhodes & Co of London acquired an interest in the firm, leading to the formation of Ford, Rhodes & Church. Soon after, H. D. Thornton joined as a resident partner, and the firm became Ford, Rhodes, Thornton & Co.

The Rise of Sri Lankan Leadership

A defining moment in the firm’s history came in 1962, when S. Vellupillai became the first Sri Lankan Senior Partner. He was also a founding member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, established in 1959, and played a significant role in strengthening the accounting profession in the country.

His leadership marked the transition of the firm into a locally led professional institution.

      Joining the Global Network

In 1966, N. G. P. Panditharathne stepped into the role of Senior Partner, ushering in a transformative era for the firm. Under his visionary leadership, the firm achieved significant global recognition. In 1987, it became a representative firm of a global Big Six accounting network, marking the beginning of its international integration.

This progress culminated in 1992 when the firm became a full member of the global KPMG network. This milestone firmly connected the Sri Lankan practice to one of the world’s leading professional services organizations, opening the door to global expertise, standards, and opportunities.

Demonstrating its continued strength in the audit profession, the firm also ranked first in the Auditors League in the 2024/2025 LMD 100 rankings.
