      Matthew Thomas is a Director at KPMG in the Cayman Islands, leading Risk & Regulatory Advisory services across the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands.

      Matthew relocated to Cayman in 2026 after an 18-year career in the UK financial services market, 11 years of which were with KPMG UK. He brings cross-jurisdictional expertise in investment and retail banking, asset management and prime brokerage. Beginning his career in Operations at a Tier 1 US investment bank, he developed domain knowledge in process, risk and control, designing and executing effective controls prior to offshoring and automation, which he now applies to pragmatic, technology-enabled transformation initiatives.

      Combining global best practice with proportionate solutions tailored to the clients, Matthew helps clients harness technology, automation and AI tools to build resilient, appropriately governed firms while keeping risk and regulatory controls front and center.

      1. Areas of expertise
        • His principal focus today is financial crime risk and regulatory management. He advises regulated firms on designing and strengthening AML/CTF frameworks, implements transaction-monitoring solutions, and leads remediation programmes to close control gaps and meet evolving regulatory expectations.
        • Matthew has led major regulatory engagements covering MiFID II, the UK Senior Managers & Certification Regime, COREP reporting and four PRA Section 166 skilled person reviews on liquidity and credit risk governance. He also advises clients on enterprise risk management and corporate governance frameworks. He helps clients establish risk and audit committee structures, embed three-lines-of-defense models, and enhance board-level and senior management risk reporting and monitoring.
