      Impacting local and global communities

KPMG inspires confidence through our actions and investments, working to help lift people beyond poverty and ensure economic growth is balanced with the need to sustain our environment.

Our approach to citizenship in the Cayman Islands has three components that help to contribute to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development:

      • Promoting inclusive development
      • Sustaining our environment

      The Global Goals

KPMG International has been helping to shape the Global Goals with others in business and community organizations. Representatives from member firms have convened and spoken at several side events of the four UN summits related to the Global Goals.

KPMG in the Cayman Islands’ people contribute to some of the Global Goals through their client work. Our corporate citizenship programs particularly focus on Goal 4 ‘Quality Education’, Goal 8 ‘Good Jobs and Economic Growth’ and Goal 12 ‘Responsible Consumption’.

      Promoting inclusive development

Inclusive development seeks to ensure benefit from economic and social development.

Inclusive, sustainable development seeks to ensure that all people benefit from sustainable economic and social development. This is fundamental to our work and can be seen in our approach to tackling projects that assist with the development of our youth, sustaining our marine life, raising awareness and funding for various forms of cancer across all ages. Our KPMG people work together to support various charities through volunteering and contribute to projects that tackle poverty and help improve the livelihoods of our communities both locally and internationally.

Devastating natural disasters are occurring all around the globe with increasing frequency, exacerbated by climate change. These often disproportionately affect those who  are least resilient.

As a global network of member firms, natural disasters affect everyone at KPMG – our people, our communities and our business. Our responses to recent catastrophic natural disasters powerfully demonstrate our values that, "We are committed to our communities," "We work together" and "We lead by example."

KPMG International and KPMG member firms, including KPMG in the Cayman Islands, have been involved with a number of significant relief and recovery efforts.

Following a disaster, our member firm will typically organize fundraising efforts. Funds raised are then channeled through our preferred NGO and development organizations.

      Examples of fundraising activities include:

      • Nepal earthquakes, 2015
      • Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, 2013
      • Pakistan floods, 2010
      • Haiti earthquake, 2010
      • Hurricane Paloma in Cayman Brac, 2008
      • Hurricane Ivan in Grand Cayman, 2004

In recent years, KPMG in the Cayman Islands have applied our business skills as well as money to make a greater and more lasting difference.

To do so, we collaborate with non-governmental organizations and KPMG International programs that have vast expertise, operations on the ground, and a global reach and outlook to match KPMG's network of firms.

Working alongside them, we help to alleviate suffering, promote economic development and rebuild communities. Our firm also often maintains lasting commitments to the Cayman Islands community throughout post-disaster recovery and development, such as on-going support to educational institutions and involvement in subsequent rebuilding projects.

      Sustaining our environment

We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment.

Our member firm is committed to reducing our impact on the environment, addressing local environmental challenges and working with clients to advance environmental sustainability.

      Our actions include:

      • Achieving ambitious emissions reduction targets
      • Developing new approaches to account for natural and social capital
      • Supporting collaborative projects with partners
      • Serving as leading providers of climate change and sustainability services for our clients.

In 2008, KPMG International announced the Global Green Initiative (GGI), a commitment to address climatechange by focusing on three pillars:

      1. To measure, reduce and report KPMG’s global emissions across the KPMG network;
      2. To support environmental projects within our wider commitment to our communities, and advance sustainability;
      3. To work with our partners, employees, suppliers and clients to help them reduce their climate change impacts.

Our member firm accepted this challenge and continues to develop new ways to address the climate change based on the three pillars.

Annually, KPMG supports the Earth Day Cleanup in the Cayman Islands. This initiative is an island wide program that allows employees, friends and family to collect litter that is hazardous to our environment. The firm also invest in the CCMI’s Ocean Literacy program, which is an environmental initiative educating Cayman’s youth on the importance of the Ocean and the life within it.

Our member firm continues to decrease the use of printed material and publications by providing web accessible versions; purchasing less newspapers; and finding new ways to use outdated stationary. We continue to distribute environmentally friendly tote bags and 89% recycled bottle material pens to staff. Each floor within our building has recycling bins for staff to recycle aluminum, plastic and glass items.

KPMG in the Cayman Islands and KPMG (BVI) Limited use business cards that are printed on 100 percent recycled paper and annually, both firms send out Christmas e-cards to clients, which decreases the use of paper cards.
