India’s financial ecosystem is entering a new phase of transformation, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as the intelligence layer built on the country’s world-leading Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Having established foundational digital rails through Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, Account Aggregator (AA), and ONDC, India is now uniquely positioned to leverage AI to make financial services more intelligent, inclusive, efficient, and scalable.
The report highlights a shift from digital finance to intelligent finance. While traditional AI and machine learning have already improved fraud detection, credit assessment, customer service, and risk management, the next wave of innovation will be driven by Generative AI and agentic AI. These technologies go beyond analysing information and recommending actions to autonomously executing tasks and workflows under appropriate human oversight.
AI adoption is rapidly moving from experimentation to enterprise-wide implementation. Financial institutions are increasingly using AI for hyper-personalised financial advice, alternative credit scoring, automated underwriting, fraud prevention, regulatory compliance, anti-money laundering monitoring, and intelligent customer engagement. This transition is enabling a shift from static processes to adaptive, continuously learning operating models.
The report discusses how responsible AI adoption could be critical to sustaining trust and growth. Strong governance, transparency, accountability, cybersecurity, explainability, and human oversight will be essential to address risks related to bias, privacy, operational failures, and financial stability. Supported by initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission and RBI’s FREE-AI framework, India has the potential to become a global leader in AI-enabled financial services.
