The KPMG network was formed in 1987 when the mega-merger of Peat Marwick International (PMI) and Klynveld Main Goerdeler (KMG) was announced to the public. At the time, it was the largest merger in the history of the accounting business. The firms believed so strongly in integrity that it created a common values charter that set a new standard for the industry.

      The founding fathers

      • Klynveld

In 1917, Piet Klynveld founded a small accounting firm in Amsterdam. Jaap Kraayenhof joined, and the firm became Klynveld Kraayenhof & Company. By the time Klynveld passed away in 1946, he left behind the largest accounting firm in the Netherlands.

      • Peat

William Barclay Peat started his career in accountancy at just 17, working for Robert Fletcher & Co. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1891, Peat assumed leadership of the firm, and renamed it William Barclay Peat & Co.

      • Marwick

In 1897, James Marwick and Rogel Mitchell established the Marwick, Mitchell & Company in New York City. Many thought there was no place or need for accountants, but the two soon built a strong reputation.

      • Goerdeler

Dr. Reinhard Goerdeler joined Deutsche Treuhand-Gesellschaft in 1953.  He was the first president of the International Federation of Accountants and a chairman of KMG. He is credited with laying the foundations of the Klynveld Main Goerdeler merger.

      150 years of service

For more than 150 years, when society has looked to organizations for help to restore fragile belief or to enable progress, professionals from KPMG’s founding firms have stepped forward. They didn’t just observe history, they helped to shape it, becoming synonymous with a pioneering spirit, bold leadership and doing the right thing. That’s a legacy KPMG firms all share and continue to draw inspiration from in our work today.
