KPMG has a specialised International Development Advisory Services (IDAS) practice that works with a wide range of global actors to address the challenges of international development work. We support these organisations in the implementation of their projects, which include Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and development impact, strategy and policy advice, governance and organisational design, and innovative financing.
International donor organisations and development banks are critical to ensuring equitable, inclusive and sustainable development worldwide. In this context, KPMG, as a global network in 147 countries, helps ensure that these organisations work together effectively to deploy resources and expertise where they are needed most.
Important international players and donor organisations
Multilateral development banks and development organisations
Multilateral development banks (MDBs), such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, and specialised development organisations play a central role in providing funding and technical expertise to support development projects worldwide. We work closely with these institutions to support the planning and implementation of projects to reduce poverty, develop infrastructure and promote economic growth. Of particular note are the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) and the EIB (European Investment Bank), which provide both financial resources and technical expertise and are key partners in reconstruction aid in Ukraine.
Philanthropic foundations and NGOs
In addition to state actors, private foundations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are also important partners in international development cooperation. These organisations often focus on specialised topics such as education, health and environmental protection and work in close partnership with companies such as KPMG to ensure that their projects have the greatest possible impact on the target groups.
European Union and bilateral aid programmes
The EU and its member states are key players in development cooperation, particularly with regard to the financing and implementation of projects that advance the global SDGs. KPMG supports EU institutions in the implementation of these programmes, with a particular focus on the reconstruction of war zones and support for refugees, such as the Ukraine aid coordinated by various German ministries.
Specific examples from German development cooperation
Germany is a leading international donor, particularly in the context of support for Ukraine. Through various ministries and organisations, such as the Federal Foreign Office (AA), the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) and the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), Germany is providing both humanitarian aid and financial support for the reconstruction of the destroyed infrastructure in Ukraine.
The reconstruction of the energy infrastructure, in which KfW and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) are also involved, is particularly noteworthy. These measures are crucial for stabilising the Ukrainian economy and ensuring the basic supply of energy for the population.
Another important aspect is the military aid provided by the German Armed Forces as part of the European Initiative in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine). This form of aid complements the humanitarian measures and ensures Ukraine's long-term resilience.
