From hype to corporate reality: in 2024, generative artificial intelligence has finally arrived in the German economy. This is shown by our study "Generative AI in the German economy", for which we surveyed 284 decision-makers.
Four out of five respondents stated that their company already has a strategy for generative AI or is currently working on one. A good two thirds have planned proof of concepts for the next twelve months to evaluate the benefits of AI for their company or have already implemented initial use cases. More than half are planning to increase their investments in generative AI - the majority even significantly. The respondents expect the implementation of generative AI in their companies to primarily increase turnover and efficiency as well as have positive effects on the productivity, satisfaction and motivation of their employees. According to the respondents, this applies to all areas of the company.
Uncertainties: Personnel and governance
At the same time, respondents recognise that the use of generative AI is associated with uncertainties, particularly with regard to data security, acceptance problems among employees and potential staff reductions.
More than half of those surveyed assume that employees will have to adapt their way of working accordingly in order to use generative AI effectively. This emphasises the importance of preparing employees for the change and training them accordingly. Many companies still see a need for action in this area in particular. Only a good third currently feel well prepared for this task.
Respondents also see challenges in the area of governance for managing generative AI and with regard to the effects of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. The majority do not feel sufficiently prepared in these areas.
Despite these uncertainties, our study shows that generative AI is already an integral part of the corporate strategy for many respondents - combined with great expectations for the future.
