Local public transport (ÖPNV [öffentlicher Personennahverkehr]) is facing what is probably the biggest challenge in its history: The traditional system of classic transport carriers, which is highly subsidised by the public sector, is faced with new providers. These have developed flexible and attractive solutions, especially for the last mile.
Policymakers increasingly recognise that the local public transport users expect a networked system of the most diverse transport carriers, including the technological achievements of the digital 21st century.
KPMG International asked 483 public transport company executives around the world about their visions for the local public transport of the future in a survey conducted by Forrester Consulting. This report, which you can download here, offers a clear conclusion: An efficient and economically viable public transport system, which also takes into account the needs of customers, still has great potential.
