Paul joined KPMG in 1995 and was appointed Tax Partner in 1998. Prior to joining KPMG Paul spent 10 years as a senior tax inspector with the UK tax authority (HMRC) occupying a number of senior positions including District Inspector, investigator and Officer in Charge at Special Compliance Office (now Special Investigations) in the Midlands (handling the largest cases of suspected fraud and avoidance). Paul has been based at KPMG in London since 2002 and leads a national team of professionals engaged full time in assisting clients deal with contentious tax matters of all kinds. Paul personally leads the largest and most complex contentious tax controversy projects and has advised a diverse range of clients from very large global multi-nationals (including a global oil company and a global bank) to high net worth individuals (including hedge fund partners and a global sports celebrity). In the course of this work Paul and his team work closely with specialist tax technical colleagues and also colleagues in KPMG UK’s Legal Services practice. Paul and his team have focused very closely on the recent and ongoing changes at HMRC in the larger business sector – this includes risk assessment and dispute resolution. Paul leads KPMG’s Tax Management Club which is recognised as a leading forum for knowledge sharing and debate in this area. Paul has shared the platform at these events with senior leaders from HMRC and HM Treasury. Paul is recognised by his peers and by HMRC as a leading tax professional and has forged strong professional relationships with many senior HMRC officials.
