Bangkok, 21 November 2018 – The KPMG Cyber Security Challenge 2018 was recently held in Bangkok for the second year running. The full-day ‘capture-the-flag’ style cyber security competition garnered more interest this year with the participation of 22 student teams from eight universities in Thailand. The competition was hosted with the aim to create awareness in cyber security and to also help the talented next generation gain knowledge of the real threats in today’s advanced technology environment.

This year’s theme of ‘capture-the-flag’ was a 7.5 hours non-stop event held as a live cyber security competition with a text-based, game-like platform that let student teams navigate through stages via command lines, trying to find the challenges hidden in various places. The competition was designed to allow student teams to solve challenges and test their skills in application and system exploitation, network analysis, digital forensics, cryptography, steganography and reverse engineering. After a full day of intense cyber security battle between the teams, the winner and the two runner up teams were announced, with KPMG{CPCUCTF_1s_b4ck!} from Chulalongkorn University securing first place; K0i$uruFortunePr0xy team from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang as first runner up; and √-1 2^3 ∑ π team from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang as second runner up.

“The adoption of the many emerging technologies we see today – whether it’s cloud technology, blockchain, AI, robotic process automation, or any other technology – needs to come hand in hand with a clear cyber security strategy and protocol. Strong cyber security is the core foundation to any successful implementation of new technologies,” said Siraporn Chulasatpakdy, Advisory Partner, KPMG in Thailand. “With a significant increase in the demand for cyber security experts and with the upcoming cyber security bill to be issued by the Thai government, our goal for the KPMG Cyber Security Challenge 2018 is to help nurture and support the future workforce to develop and strengthen their cyber security skills and capacity.”

Not only in Thailand, but the need for a strong cyber security foundation and workforce is seen globally. The 2018 Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey shows that cyber security has been pushed further up the boardroom agenda with the majority of the survey’s respondents (68%) reporting that their boards are supporting them in their cyber security strategies, and IT budget is at a 13 year high. While there is a 25% increase among boards that pinpoint the need to improve cyber security as their top concern, 65% of the companies interviewed are facing skills shortages, hence the importance of building up cyber security skills.

“At KPMG, we want to be one of the contributors that helps prepare our future generation to be equipped with the skills to increase the country’s capabilities in cyber security. By providing students with real-time, out-of-classroom experience, we are supporting them to build their skills to be a strong foundation for Thailand’s IT infrastructure,” said Siraporn.

“We participated in the competition last year and we gained a lot of real experience from it. This is why we decided to come back this year. We have been practicing and learning a lot more about cyber security,” said KPMG{CPCUCTF_1s_b4ck!} team.

Teams KPMG{CPCUCTF_1s_b4ck!}, K0i$uruFortunePr0xy, and √-1 2^3 ∑ π received THB50,000, THB30,000, and THB20,000 cash prize, respectively. The first two teams will also be sponsored by KPMG in Thailand to compete on a regional level at the KPMG Cyber Security Challenge event to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 28 November 2018.

KPMG in Thailand’s Cyber Security Challenge 2018 coincides with KPMG’s International Cyber Security Awareness Month – a program to provide cyber literacy training for 80,000 youth in 45 countries around the world. The program is aimed at educating young students about the importance of cyber security and internet risk. As part of KPMG’s International Cyber Security Awareness Month, KPMG in Thailand will also be conducting workshops at schools in Thailand to increase awareness on the importance of cyber security.
