On October 6th, the government presented a new agreement regarding work- and family reunification permits.

The agreement introduces a new minimum salary level for work permits. Currently, the salary requirement to obtain a work permit is 80 percent of Sweden's median salary, which corresponds to a monthly salary of 29,680 SEK. According to the new agreement, this will be adjusted to 90 percent of the median salary. This year, this corresponds to a monthly salary of 33,390 SEK. The government will be given the mandate to, if necessary, grant exceptions to the salary requirement. The government will also be able to exclude certain professions from being granted work permits.

The government also proposes several tightening measures in the rules regarding family reunification permits. Among other things, a waiting period of two years will be introduced for the reference person in Sweden, as well as a limitation to one’s circle of eligible family members. An increased maintenance requirement will also be introduced. Please read more on this topic in KPMG’s TaxNews on stricter conditions for family immigration from 8 September 2025

The government will soon present the entire legislative proposal for work permits. Currently, a date for when these changes are proposed to come into effect has not been specified.
