      KPMG in Ireland

      Planet

      We are pleased to confirm that KPMG in Ireland has renewed its carbon neutral status for 2024.

      New initiatives for 2024:

      • Data driven decisions

        We’re taking real action on sustainability with our market leading Internal Price of Carbon (IPC) programme - a key tool toward our Net Zero 2030 goal. By putting a financial value on our travel-based carbon emissions, we’re enabling smarter, greener decisions while funding impactful community initiatives.

      • Designing for tomorrow

        Our new Harcourt Square headquarters sets a new standard for sustainability, integrating cutting-edge green technology, low carbon, and LEED/WELL-centred workspaces. Designed for efficiency, well-being, and a greener future, it embodies our commitment to responsible business.

      • Embracing the circular economy

        We’re cutting waste, boosting recycling rates, and embedding circular economy principles into our operations. From phasing out single-use items to enhancing composting and zero-waste initiatives, we’re driving real impact for a sustainable future.

      • Powering a greener future

        KPMG Ireland is cutting emissions with alternative fuels, energy-efficiency investments, and responsible sourcing of electricity. By investing in sustainable energy solutions, we’re reducing our carbon footprint and driving real change, delivering a 90% reduction in energy related emissions since 2019.

      • Purchasing with purpose

        KPMG Ireland continues to expand its ESG principles into procurement, ensuring ethical sourcing, fair labour, and reduced environmental impact. Through collaboration, due diligence, and innovation, we’re driving transparency and lasting positive change.

      • Empowering our people

        At KPMG Ireland, we empower our people to live and work sustainably through green commuting supports, ESG education, and community impact initiatives. From bike-to-work schemes to sustainability training and volunteering, we make it easier for our workforce to drive positive change - at work and beyond.

      Sustainability Action Plan

      Our Sustainability Action Plan provides a clear roadmap for achieving our goal of becoming a net zero carbon organisation by 2030, as validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

      We have transitioned to new emissions factor provider for our 2024 Scope 3 supplier emissions reporting. In doing so we have rebased Scope 3 supplier emissions to 2019 using the updated expanded model.

      2019 2024
      Scope 1 864 231
      Scope 2 1,339 -
      Scope 3 20,664 18,010
      Total emissions 22,867 18,241
      Total emissions per FTE 7.38 4.5

      Supplier procurement process updates

      As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable procurement, we have undertaken a series of supplier engagement activities aimed at fostering collaboration, enhancing sustainability practices, and ensuring compliance with our environmental and social standards which includes:

      Recognising the importance of accurate Scope 3 supplier emissions data, we have focussed key efforts on following the best practice approach of moving from spend-based emissions calculations where possible to more accurate data for our key suppliers.

      As part of this exercise, we analysed our supplier emissions information to establish the key emitting spend categories and suppliers. For the key suppliers identified as part of this exercise, we then engaged heavily with our internal supplier relationship managers and the relevant suppliers to secure real emissions data.

      By improving the quality of our emissions data, we can better track our progress towards our sustainability goals and identify areas for further improvement.

      To formalise our expectations of our suppliers and to ensure consistent adherence to our sustainability standards, we have introduced a Supplier Code of Conduct. This code outlines our ethical, environmental, and social expectations of our supplier partners and encourages our suppliers to adopt sustainable practices.

      It fosters transparency and trust, and encourages improved environmental and social performance across our supply chain. Now integrated into our supplier onboarding process, the code contributes to our overall sustainability goals and serves as a guiding document for our suppliers.

      People

      Prosperity

      At KPMG we believe in Corporate Citizenship. It is at the heart of all great organisations, and we are committed to making a real difference to the communities in which we operate.

      All organisations have responsibility to their people, their clients and societies. We believe a real commitment to Corporate Citizenship unites an organisation, strengthens its reputation and creates vital links with the communities in which it operates.

      We want our employees to be part of this effort and actively get involved in community activities that will ultimately make a real positive impact on society.

      KPMG Ireland works with Business in the Community on their Business Impact Map, which captures an organisation's impact on society.

      In 2024 KPMG had the following impacts:

      Community connection:

      194

      Volunteer hours:

      17,777

      Young people reached:

      7,431

      Cash donations:

      €683,138

      Employee fundraising:

      €142,906

      In-kind donations:

      €990,531

      We believe that both KPMG and our staff have an immense role and opportunity to positively impact our surrounding communities.

      The hard work and education obtained by our staff members serves as a good example to the youth in our community and allows us to engage in numerous organisations in the wider community such as The Business in the Community Ireland Ready for Working initiative which provides work experience and guidance to people who are looking to move on from homelessness into employment or training.

      Since 2012, KPMG has been the Corporate Volunteer Sponsor with St. Michael’s House and annually provides large numbers of volunteers to participate in various planting, cleaning, painting and sporting activities.

      KPMG staff also worked with the charity to develop a new and innovative project of writing and packaging multi-sensory stories for use with profoundly disabled children.

      With over 170 residential units in the Dublin area, we regularly have volunteers painting, planting and refurbishing in many of their locations.

      Each year KPMG supports individual staff members who fundraise for their own personal charities, and gives them a donation towards their fundraising efforts based on the amount raised. This ensures that the firm supports a wide range of charities that our staff feel passionate about.

      We annually hold a charity walk to raise funds for deserving causes. For the last number of years, people in KPMG, the alumni, family and friends have raised over €750,000 for a number of charities. In 2024 we raised over €21,000 for Tiglin.

      Education is one of the key pillars of KPMG’s Corporate Citizenship strategy and we believe that education is paramount in terms of developing society for future success.

      Our education programme allows us to further the capacity of schools and colleges, work with children and young people to advance potential, and invest in skills that support enterprise and the community.

      We have aligned our Corporate Citizenship strategy to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and specifically on Goal 4 Quality Education. Our over-arching theme is Lifelong Learning and we focus more specifically on literacy and working on initiatives that use skills-based volunteering - harnessing the talents of our highly educated workforce.

      Business in the Community

      Through Business in the Community Ireland, KPMG has forged a highly successful relationship with CBS Westland Row School, which involves KPMG colleagues mentoring 5th and 6th year students and making a real difference in their lives. In the last year we celebrated our 21st year of partnership with the school.

      KPMG is also working with Business in the Community on a programme called “Time to Read”. This programme involves volunteers from businesses providing one to one reading support to students from second class students in City Quay National School.

      The 24-week programme has volunteers from KPMG provide reading support to students in a one-on-one environment.

      The desired outcomes of the programme are to:

      • increase the enjoyment of reading;
      • improve fluency and comprehension when reading;
      • increase confidence in reading; and
      • improve and encourage self-discovery.

      KPMG is also involved in a numeracy programme for 7-year-olds, called “Time to Count."

      Hosted Mentor Celebration event in Platform X – running programme for 21 years

      In March we hosted the Business in the Community Ireland Mentor Programme Celebration event. This event is an acknowledgment and celebration of the achievements of the many mentors and students who conclude their programmes in 2024.

      A number of schools from Dublin attended as well as schools across the country who joined virtually. This programme allows students to engage with an adult mentor over a two-year period through 5th and 6th year, helping to improve confidence, communication, and social skill.

      Each year we have 16 volunteers who mentor students, meeting them monthly for lunch and giving them guidance and advice on navigating school, exams and life after the Leaving Certificate. We’re proud to be partnered with CBS Westland Row, providing KPMG mentors to students for over 20 years.

      KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards

      As part of our Corporate Citizenship programme, we have a focus on education and specifically on literacy. In 2020 we became the title sponsor of the KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards.

      We saw it as an ideal way to promoting literacy nationally across schools and communities south and north of the border and also supporting Irish authors, illustrators, Irish publishers and the general literacy infrastructure.

      Supporting the KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards is only one element to KPMG’s focus on literacy. This is built on many years of other KPMG literacy initiatives such as promoting World Book Day each year, the development of the BOLD Girls programme and subsequent spin-off of that in the format of BOLD GIRLS meets 20x20, and in more recent times our involvement with Children’s Books Ireland and our Books for Birdies initiative.

      In September 2021 KPMG and Children’s Books Ireland announced the launch of Free To Be Me: The Diversity, Inclusion and Representation project. The project showcases the rich diversity of modern Ireland and aims to ensure that every child can see themselves reflected in a book, as well as learning about the lives of others whose experiences and perspectives may differ from their own. The Free To Be Me reading guide contains over 360 book recommendations compiled by a team of expert reviewers, each title chosen for its portrayal of diverse characters, themes and experiences.

      In KPMG Ireland, inclusion is how we unleash the collective diversity of our people. We continue to build an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the diverse voices of our people. We respect each other and draw strengths from our differences. We know that when this happens our people can be more creative, innovative, and successful.

      The Free To Be Me project has a similar ethos, it is hugely important in terms of showcasing diversity in children’s books and fostering a sense of belonging for everyone in society. Having books which reflect diversity will ultimately lead to a more inclusive society and we are proud to play a supportive role.

      Books for Birdies initiative – 2000 books to schools in Kildare/Meath

      The "Books for Birdies" initiative is a unique collaboration that intertwines three of KPMG's key sponsorships: the KPMG Women’s Irish Open, Irish golf sensation Leona Maguire, and the charity partnership with Children’s Books Ireland.

      This initiative was designed to leverage the excitement of golf and the achievements of athletes like Leona Maguire to promote literacy and education among young learners.

      For every birdie recorded by Leona Maguire in 2024 and by every player at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open, KPMG pledged to donate one children's book to schools in need.

      This initiative not only celebrated women’s sports but also extended its impact to support educational initiatives and literacy among young learners. 2,000 books were donated to schools in the Kildare/Meath area.

      The selected books were chosen for their diverse characters and inclusive themes, aligning with KPMG's commitment to promoting gender equality and celebrating diversity.

      Children’s Books Ireland Volunteering Day

      As part of the KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards, we host a volunteer day where over 60 of our colleagues go out to schools around the country engaging with students who are participating in the Junior Juries process.

      The Junior Juries are set up in schools to read some of the best Irish children’s books of the year, score them, and decide the winner of the Junior Juries Award. The aim is to get the students excited about reading.

      The KPMG volunteers run workshops with the students where they read aloud from a book, hold a quiz, help the class to design a book cover and present them with certificates. KPMG has been the proud sponsor of the awards since 2020.

      As part of a Workplace Corporate Citizenship initiative, KPMG Ireland has an annual workplace entrepreneurial programme to encourage staff to use their bright minds to come up with bright ideas to address local social and environmental needs.

      Project Bright is an innovative workplace initiative aimed at encouraging staff to be social entrepreneurs. Staff participated in a competition to identify social issues and then came up with unique solutions that would make a real difference to the associated community organisation, utilising the skill-set of our own employees.

      Through this initiative KPMG is

      1. directly engaging with staff;
      2. encouraging them to be innovative;
      3. getting the winning team to project manage the winning idea and;
      4. empowering them to engage with a broad cross-section of their peers.

      In 2024, the team hosted an event for senior cycle girls to coincide with International ICT Day to encourage them to keep on STEM subjects. 80 girls from a number of Deis schools participated in the event.
