The progressive integration of artificial intelligence (AI), in particular large language models (LLMs), opens up enormous potential for companies to increase efficiency and innovate. However, the path to sustainable and value-adding utilisation is often complex. Many organisations ask themselves: How mature are our AI capabilities really - and how do we get to the next level?

A framework for the maturity level

The white paper "AI Capability Maturity Assessment" presents a practice-orientated framework designed to help companies further develop their AI strategy. It is divided into six levels (levels 0 to 5), with each level characterised by specific technological capabilities that are essential for achieving and mastering that level.

The six maturity levels at a glance:

      • Level 0: Foundational Data Readiness

The basis: Creating access to relevant data sources and preparing data in a targeted manner.

      • Level 1: Basic Interaction & Prompting

First steps with large language models - from the use of pre-trained models to targeted prompt engineering.

      • Level 2: Contextualisation

Enriching generic AI models with specific company knowledge to generate relevant and fact-based answers.

      • Level 3: Enhanced Reliability & Control

Increasing the reliability and traceability of AI applications through Agentic RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), model grounding and evaluation.

      • Level 4: Advanced Adaptation & Integration

Combination of different AI techniques and targeted fine-tuning for customised solutions.

      • Level 5: Operationalisation & Optimisation at Scale

Industrialisation and cost optimisation - for example through scalable operating models and hybrid architectures.

Why a maturity model is crucial

The maturity model enables an objective assessment of the current technological capabilities and shows where there is a need for action. This provides companies with a structured basis for developing a targeted roadmap: from gap analysis and technology investments through to a coordinated strategy for the operationalisation of AI.
