Volkswagen is a globally active group that has to master a wide range of challenges. The software landscape of the Wolfsburg-based carmaker is at least as diverse. Dr Paul Hünecke, Head of Strategy & Principles for Legal Affairs and Integrity at VW, describes it this way: "Our department in Wolfsburg alone runs almost 60 applications, including for integrity, compliance, risk management and legal affairs. Each piece of software is unique. It has to be maintained and operated. That costs time and money."
Daily work of VW employees is enormously facilitated
We have supported Volkswagen AG in bundling and optimising this software diversity. The majority of the apps are combined in one platform. This makes the daily work of VW employees in the area of integrity and legal affairs much easier. We launched the so-called Integrity and Legal Affairs (ILA) Platform together with Microsoft as part of our partnership.

For the "VW ILA Platform" project, we automated heterogeneous use cases and combined them in a user-friendly app. The technological backbone of the project was the Microsoft Power Platform. The use of a single platform leads to significant simplification for IT operations and users. These advantages are particularly noticeable in large and multi-layered governance and organisational structures - such as at the Volkswagen Group.
Harmonisation of the fragmented IT landscape
The KPMG team has developed apps, automated workflows and dashboards. The IT department of Volkswagen AG rolled out the Microsoft Power platform in the group in parallel. The most important goal of the project was to harmonise VW's fragmented IT landscape. To achieve this, we relied on agile methods to enable a fast and cost-efficient approach. A prototype was created for each use case. This helped to test the functionality and adapt it to VW's needs.
The ILA project not only offers VW immediate benefits in the integrity and legal business areas. It also holds potential for other business areas within the group.
