Carla Figliomeni’s practice focuses on trusts and estates and personal tax planning. Carla advises clients on planning for family business succession, corporate reorganizations and amalgamations, and estate freezes, as well as maximizing capital gains exemptions, identifying income-splitting opportunities, and drafting wills and trusts with consideration to probate tax issues, Family Law Act implications, and eligibility for the Ontario Disability Support Program. In addition, Carla’s practice encompasses domestic and cross-border estate planning, including Canada-U.S. planning and planning involving common law and civil law jurisdictions and forced heirship regimes.
Carla works closely with family offices, including KPMG’s multi-family office, to help simplify complex wealth circumstances, protect and grow a family’s estate, plan for effective charitable giving, and uphold a family’s legacy. She also advises both individual and corporate trustees, executors, and attorneys for property on their duties and obligations, and has experience advising on multi-jurisdictional estate administrations. In addition, Carla often counsels beneficiaries on their rights with respect to their interest in a trust or estate.
Prior to joining KPMG Law LLP, Carla was a partner in the Tax group of a large national firm, focusing on personal tax planning for high net worth individuals.
Carla enjoys writing and speaking on a variety of topics. Carla is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
