At KPMG, giving back is an essential aspect of life and an integral part of our values, culture, and Impact Plan. Through the KPMG Foundation, we want to give our people the opportunity and time to make a real difference in the community and for charities they care about. By giving every person the opportunity to submit a volunteer project, we aim to motivate everyone to become actively involved and make an impact.

      KPMG Foundation Project

Sustainable Stories is a non-profit organization that develops creative “read & do” books for children, centered around the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each book combines an engaging story with playful activities that help children discover sustainability and entrepreneurship in an accessible and interactive way.

The goal of Sustainable Stories is to introduce sustainability concepts early in life and inspire children, the adults of tomorrow, to think about how they can contribute to a better world. By turning complex topics into simple stories and hands-on exercises, the initiative helps children understand themes such as responsible consumption, health, and environmental awareness.

To expand its impact, Sustainable Stories invites companies to help bring its mission to life in various forms. One way to contribute is by having volunteers visit classrooms to read the books with the children, facilitate playful activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, and spark age-appropriate conversations about sustainability in an engaging way. Through these interactions, the stories go beyond the pages of the book and become a shared learning experience that encourages children to reflect on the world around them.

      Making an impact

On Tuesday, 3 March and Thursday, 5 March 2026, five colleagues from the KPMG Sustainability team volunteered at GO! Daltonschool De Kleine Icarus in Ghent to introduce Sustainable Stories to several classes.

During the sessions, the volunteers started by reading a Sustainable Stories book to the entire class, each one focusing on a specific Sustainable Development Goal. For these teaching days, some classes explored SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) while others explored SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

After the reading session, the volunteers organized a question-and-answer discussion about sustainability and the themes from the book. For SDG 3, the conversation was centered around physical and mental health. For SDG 12, the discussion explored the idea of circularity and recyclability. The goal was to encourage the children to reflect on the story, raise their awareness, and let the children come up with ideas for actions they can take themselves.

One of the key takeaways from these discussions was how engaged and knowledgeable the children already were. Many of them were eager to participate and share their own insights about sustainability.

The activities that followed were adapted to the age group. With younger children, the focus was mainly on the story and introducing simple sustainability concepts. Older students participated in creative exercises linked to the SDGs. For example:

      • For SDG 3, children worked in groups to create their own “Health roadmap”, thinking about habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
      • For SDG 12, they worked in groups to design their “City of the future”, incorporating ideas around recycling, reuse, and circularity.

At the end of the sessions, the children proudly presented their sustainable world of the future to the class.

Through initiatives like Sustainable Stories, we help inspire the next generation to think creatively about sustainability—because stimulating entrepreneurship and sustainable thinking in children, the adults of tomorrow, can help shape a better future for everyone.

We are incredibly grateful to our volunteers who continue to seize opportunities to make a real difference. By working #Together, we achieve so much more, building stronger connections and supporting our planet in meaningful ways.
