Following discussions with the Commonwealth Department of Finance over recent weeks regarding whistleblower allegations against KPMG Australia, Finance has confirmed that it will conduct an independent review of our firm. We have voluntarily agreed not to bid for new Commonwealth work until the review is complete, which is expected by the end of September 2026. The Department of Finance announcement is available here.
We welcome the independent review.
We acknowledge that individuals in our firm have made mistakes. But those failings do not reflect the overwhelming majority of our partners and people – good and talented professionals who continue to deliver high-quality work with integrity, and with a deep commitment to our values and ethics.
We are focused on finalising a clear and robust Remediation Plan, which we are committed to implementing in full. The plan will address the key areas where we fell short of expected standards.
We must demonstrate that these issues have been properly remediated.
KPMG has continued to work openly with our government clients, and we are liaising closely with the Department of Finance on these matters.
For our government clients, we understand that supporting the work of the public service is a privilege that carries important additional transparency obligations, including those under the Commonwealth Supplier Code of Conduct and equivalent codes in the States and Territories.
We are proud of the contribution our people make to important public outcomes, and we recognise that this must be matched by accountability, transparency and the highest standards of conduct by our firm.
We know we have work to do to regain trust. That work is already underway. We will engage constructively and cooperatively with the independent reviewer, listen carefully to feedback from our clients, regulators, stakeholders and our people, and take the actions needed to strengthen our culture, governance and ways of working.
We will fully co-operate with the Department of Finance review of KPMG Australia. We will continue engaging with each State and Territory under the relevant supplier codes and keep them informed of our remediation progress.
Our commitment is to learn from what has occurred, act with humility and urgency, continue to deliver quality outcomes for our clients, and demonstrate through our actions – not just our words – that we are worthy of the confidence placed in us.
