The value of digital literacy for young people in our modern world cannot be overstated and it is therefore vitally importance to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a tech-savvy environment. With new opportunities come new risks, however, which can pose consequence that are just as serious as physical dangers. As such, it is never too early to understand how to protect oneself from cyber threats.

With this in mind, the KPMG global network organises annual events to raise youth cybersecurity awareness. These events teach participants how to combat digital threats and harness the vast potential of the digital realm for personal and professional growth. This KPMG Global Cyber Day initiative exemplifies KPMG’s dedication to societal support and promoting digital literacy, with 30 countries from across the globe joining the initiative and over 200,000 young people receiving training in cybersecurity in 2024 alone.

This year marks the fourth occasion that the KPMG in Ukraine team has participated in this initiative with the support of the State Service of Education Quality of Ukraine. Our IT and cybersecurity consultants held online training for schoolchildren aged between 7 to 17, making this the largest training session in terms of student participation among all KPMG firms worldwide.

Topics discussed included such important matters as online personal data protection, identifying and countering cyber threats, working with artificial intelligence, recognising deepfakes, and much more.

In the context of the reality facing Ukraine, online training is the only way to involve the maximum number of children from various cities and villages in cybersecurity education. Despite physical threats, cyber risks have also become particularly important and affect all users. We aim to not only equip our children with modern tools and skills for navigating the digital space but also to instil a responsible attitude towards cyber threats and the use of effective protection.

Thanks to the efforts contributed to this initiative by our team, KPMG in Ukraine achieved the following overall results:

  • Two interactive online training sessions for children from two age groups: 7–10 and 11–17 years old.

  • Almost 100,000 students from both age groups watched our training videos, as evidenced by surveys conducted after the event.

  • 3,100 individual and simultaneous group connections recorded for both sessions, with more than 24,000 online views.

  • 97.2% of those interviewed said that the sessions were of value to them.

  • Survey results demonstrated that the audience showed the most interest in topics like cyberbullying, online shopping, and fraud, as well as personal data protection.
