Olof Matson was recruited to KPMG from another major consultancy to join the firm’s forensic team. Forensics is all about preventing, detecting and investigating irregularities, embezzlement and corruption. It is a growing area within KPMG, and Olof is part of developing the offering.
Different driving forces
– Clients turn to us for a variety of reasons. Sometimes with basic needs related to complying with new regulations and security frameworks, other times with larger projects to set up sustainable and resilient ways of working to prevent and detect irregularities. We always support clients when incidents occur, whether minor or major. The driving forces behind these engagements can vary for our clients. Sometimes it’s about regulations, other times it’s about mitigating financial risk and safeguarding their reputation. And often, the value of a strong reputation far outweighs the cost of a financial loss.
A wide range of clients
– The charm of forensics, I think, is that we never really know what the day will bring. Just this morning, I was discussing an investigation in China, followed by a meeting about a case here in Sweden, and then ongoing matters in South Africa and South America — before circling back to Sweden again. Most of our clients have international operations, and we often lead investigations from Sweden in close collaboration with trusted local teams.
Some projects are completed within two weeks, whereas others can continue for over three months. When something unexpected surfaces at one of our clients, we respond with speed and precision. Often, we’re able to launch an investigation and deliver a full report within a relatively short time frame.
How I make a difference
– At the end of the day, regardless of the type of project we’re involved in, I help my clients identify and prevent fraud and other irregularities to create a more stable future – for both my clients and society at large.
