Optional standard mileage rate for the final six months of 2022

Optional standard mileage rate for the final six months of 2022

The IRS today announced an increase in the optional standard mileage rate for the final six months of 2022—in recognition of recent gasoline price increases—which taxpayers may use to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, medical, or moving purposes.

Announcement 2022-3 [PDF 72 KB] provides that beginning July 1, 2022, the standard mileage rates will be:

  • 62.5 cents per mile for business miles driven (up from 58.5 cents per mile at the start of the year)
  • 22 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes for qualified active duty members of the Armed Forces (up from 18 cents per mile at the start of the year)

The 14 cents per mile rate for charitable organizations remains unchanged as it is set by statute.

For travel from January 1 through June 30, 2022, taxpayers should use the rates set forth in Notice 2022-03 [PDF 87 KB].

Midyear increases in the optional mileage rates are rare; the last time the IRS made such an increase was in 2011.
